Some thoughts on the qualification process…
- The qualification procedure should consider the timeframe when the World Championships are being held. The Worlds are often held in the September to November timeframe. However, in 2019, they are in June.
- If the World Championships are overseas, it could take 6 to 9 months to plan attendance, so an early qualification process is necessary.
- If they are being held nearby, then maybe only a month or two might be enough time to line up housing, crew, boat & sails, transportation, etc.
- The qualification procedure should be established before the start of whatever racing series is used to determine the qualifiers.
- The prior year’s season series results is a good selection method and is used by other one-design fleets. The only real drawback occurs when the Worlds are local, the qualification occurs nearly a year before the regatta, which could be considered too early.
- There are applicable class rules – see Appendix A -“Championship Rules” of the Etchells class One-Design Rules.
