Lessons Learned from Dave
So, did anyone learn anything that they will put into practice?
I compiled (and have updated) a 2-page pamphlet summarizing 39 Lessons Learned from Dave Perry during his racing clinic on July 29-31, 2019. (Print it 2-sided for an onboard cheat-sheet.) Dave Perry’s “Pyramid of Success” in sailboat racing is watermarked onto the background of the pamphlet.
Dave’s Pyramid of Success, inspired by legendary UCLA basketball coach John Wooden’s version, emphasizes mastery of 3 skills to excel in sailboat racing – boat handling, boat speed, and tactics. In addition, the pyramid reminds us that boat handling (crew work) is the foundation that should be conquered first, followed by boat speed (sail trim, rig adjustments, etc.), and finally tactics.
