A DNC typically is scored one point more than the number of entries in the series, according to RRS rule A9. However, neither the NOR or SI’s, nor the RRS, define how to determine the number of boats entered in the series. I expect the usual way is by counting the boats that have paid the entry fee and correctly filled out the required registration forms. A drawback of that approach is that occasionally, boats register for the series, but never sail a race, so boats that are DNC for only part of the series pay an additional penalty for not racing. If a properly registered boat is counted as an entry in the series only after the boat “came to the starting area” for at least one race of the series, the scoring penalty for DNC is lessened a little.
However, this approach will require the series to be rescored as boats join the series and increase the number of entries (the DNC points will increase for races already sailed and scored). The image to the left presents the options in SailWave for assigning points to a scoring code, such as DNC.
What do you think?

I plan to report the results on the Fleet 27 website using following:
- DNC is 1 more than the number of entrants in any series (per RRS A9). (no change here)
- An entrant means a boat that is both registered properly, and comes to the starting area for at least one race of the series. (new clarification)
- As entrants increase in number during any series, that series’ prior scores get rescored to reflect the new number of entrants. (Formalizing current practice)
- If a boat comes to the starting area and checks in for any single race on a given day, the boat counts as a “boat in the starting area” for all races of the day.(Formalizing current practice.)
