D.2.3(d) MODIFICATIONS, MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR
Limited extra reinforcement in way of attachment of fittings to the hull, deck, cuddy, coaming, seat, bulkheads or knees, shall consist of: polyester resin and glass tapes and/or backing plates of metal, wood, filler or any combination of these.
Reinforcement shall not exceed the area needed to prevent local crushing or fracture. It shall not create an additional structural member, nor connect two or more structural components.
It would be a benefit to expand the list of permitted materials used for backing plates (as well as for fitting attachments) to include commercially available “phenolic plastics,” such as G-10 and GPO-1 laminate sheets. These materials are readily available, cost effective, and excellent marine materials. They can be drilled and tapped, and are corrosion proof.
