F.4.2 (Boom) Construction

The boom-related rules in section F.4 omit any reference to a controlling specification. Refer to F.3.2(b) Mast Construction; this section points to a (builder’s) specification for the mast construction. While we members (unfortunately) do not know what is in that mast (builder’s) specification, hopefully it completely defines the requirements. The boom rules probably should have similar explicit definition, either in the OD rules, or in a referenced specification. On the other hand, maybe the absence of this language is what allows anyone to build the boom (note, in the case of the mast, rule F.3.2 limits mast construction to licensed builders). In any event, there is nothing in the OD Rules F.4 that defines the boom cross sectional shape, other than the overall width/height given in F.4.4. The green boom shape in the picture shows what the current OD Rules appear to allow because there is no reference in the OD Rules to a requirement that controls the boom cross-sectional shape.

Any and all “builder’s” specifications should be made available for inspection to the class members, preferably by posting them on the class website.
