› Pre-2022 Etchells Class Rules › OD Rules Prohibit Telltales on Shrouds
The OD Rules do not mention telltales attached to standing rigging. I think these are called by a different name in Australia and maybe in the UK, but they are usually made from yarn, magnetic recording tape or other light weight, flexible material. Therefore, under the “if these rules do not say you can, then you cannot” mantra, any shroud-mounted telltales are prohibited from Etchells sailboats. The rules make provisions for the masthead fly, draft stripes and sail-mounted telltales. So the absence of any mention of shroud-mounted telltales means they are prohibited. Although, possibly you could call the telltales a part of your personal crew gear and they would be counted against the 10kg/30kg crew gear weight limit, and would have to be removed when weighing the boat (ha-ha!).
