More Cowbell Dominates 1st Tuesday Evening of 2020

Good morning troops,

Yesterday was novel and not in a Corona sort of way.  Fleet 27 started its 2020 season in style.  For this season’s first keel boat racing on Casco Bay, we had sunshine, warmth, some exposed skin, sunscreen, and little worries about PFD usage.  Five boats made it to the starting area ably run by Theo Corson along with Karen, Sarah, and Jay on the RC vessel Red

Laser jockeys Milburn and Tolford did their best at setting marks in the steady 3-5 knot southerly in waters between Clapboard and the HBS anchorage.  After the aborted May sailing season, the pent up demand resulted in the first General Recall of the year but after andonishment from the Fleet captain, further starts went off without a hitch.  Race 1 was a “M” course while the second was a Triangle starting in the middle of the windward leg.  Medusa led the fleet to the first mark then slipped back as those with downwind speed played their hands.  Sailing these boats without a chute required good wing on wing skills that most reacquired by the second race.  Everyone enjoyed being out on the water, all agreed the RC used all of the wind available that night as the fleet was towed home to their resting spots.

Results (click here) were very close:

  • More Cowbell with the Morin clan plus 1…..1 and 3
  • Andromeda, there is Justice with 2 crew……4 and 1
  • And in a three way tie for third:

Congratulations to all and we look forward to seeing you all out next week.  For those who are yet to sail, we have crews for RC and marks for next week but will be looking to fill these positions throughout the season.  Contact Race Officer Seth Sprague or myself to volunteer for a nice Tuesday evening out on a power boat running the races for the rest of your fleet.  With the numbers sparse, running these races is easier than ever.  We are looking forward to hearing from you.
