Fleet 27 Scuttlebutt

We have it from good authority that the PYC float launching may be Saturday, May 8. The waterfront crew is good, no, the GOAT, but most likely the fleet will be unable to use the facilities that weekend. Discussions have not begun with our friends at HBS but one might assume the Fleet Launch might occur the next Saturday, May 15th. Tides are low at 0816 so maybe we’ll drag our feet a bit, let the 24 crowd start first with our first splash after 0900. A second thought is we launch by age so the Heritage fleet goes first? Stay tuned!

The above item might postpone the first night of racing until May 18th……Race is working on this along with ideas for the updated NoR and SIs to conform to the new RRS. The countdown timer has been reset to May 18 assuming this date holds.

And where is Dave Perry with all things rulesy? I bet we hear about this as well. No moss growing on this new executive committee.

With the brew-ha-ha floating out of Australia this week, the past Fleet measurer was caught being busy. It seems we have 20 Heritage Division boats though we are not quite sure who might have had “new” keels over the past three decades. If you have had or suspect your closest rival does not qualify as Heritage, speak now or forever keep your trap shut.

We have 4 boats built by the Old Greenwich Boat Company, 4 more from Tillotson-Pearson, 18 Canucks from Ontario, 2 Petticrows from the UK, and one Pacesetter from down under.

According to Etchells International, Australian boats post 2011 made in/on “mold 11”, may not be quite an Etchells, more juiced than the earlier editions. Possibly these boats came from this super “mold 11” but listed as coming from the original “mold 9”. A quick undercover measurement session of the lone Aussie finds her to be in compliance, not too long nor flashing a bustle, the Witch is safe!

Reviewing information available, it seems Fleet 27 has only one boat without a listed mold number. This boat has been known to have had a stay at an unnamed, out of state, boatshop and who knows what they really did to her. She is quite spritely and often shows her stern to the fleet. A nighttime raid to her winter respite may be called for. But who might this sassy lass be? Please opine.

Furthermore, a question is posed. Assuming COVID doesn’t interfere, and some are anxious for more racing, what might be the interest in a three Sunday series of one design racing, round the inflatable marks or government marks as the fleet sees fit, two to four races per day? Looking at the Sundays after the Pilot Race, June 20 (interferes with the Nationals in Marblehead and Fathers Day), Interclubs (July 13), and the new SailMaine Festival and Regatta (August 15). What is the interest, if any, in this? If not racing, might you or your crew be available for RC work?

June in the ‘Head, what say you? Does the Fleet go down en masse like a decade ago? Could crews be formed from boats unwilling to go themselves? Does Justice sail down the week before? Can arrangements be made for HBS to haul and launch inexpensively and on a schedule so we don’t miss a Tuesday? Who do we know who would put up crews? Can we stay and camp out at the Doyle loft for the weekend? Do we question our friend at Doyle for a winter pre-nationals discount on sails? How will our sassy lassy pass muster at measurement or will she just stay home? How far on 12-year old axle grease can one boat go without a tow truck? Questions, questions. Always questions.

Until next time……….

  1. Spring launching has been rescheduled for Saturday May 15th, weather and other factors being with us. We will be joined with members of the Harraseeket YC J/24 fleet so it may be a bit longer if you are at the tail end of the line. The tide is low at 0816 so HBS plans on starting launching at 0900 this year. Follow Chris Morin’s lead and get in line before 0500 to beat the tow boat’s arrival. I think he actually launches his boat by himself!

Price is still $100 paid in cash or check (to Fleet 27) so our Treasurer will send in one check for all who launched.
