The image “slider” feature at the top of the website is built on a frame that is 1200 px wide by 300 px high. So, 1200 x 300 would be the best size for a photo that will fill the frame. Many of the photos being used (the ones that fill the width) are at most 980px wide (some much less) , and these images have been scaled to fill the 1200px wide space. And these images have been cropped at about 250 px in height to retain the 4:1 width to height ratio. Stretching the 980 x 250 image to fit the 1200 x 300 frame size is why they are a little blurred. If the image is less than 980 px, then the side borders are filled with the teal blue background.
A good approach if you are providing images to go in the slider on the page header, provide them at the full resolution of your camera, and I can adjust them using MacOS Preview or the Gimp image program. Or, you can provide them with a 1200 pixel width, and I can frame and crop the height at 300 pixels to pull out a suitable part of the image.
Any other resolution can work, as well, using a combination of the teal background and scaling the image to fit.
The Apple retina display is about 225 ppi (pixels per inch), so for a 15 inch wide photo, that is a whopping 3,375 pixel-wide image. Maybe more bandwidth than we want to use.
