A Full Agenda for Dave Perry’s Racing Clinic

Monday Afternoon Race Officials Roundtable

Dave organizes interactive exercises and in-depth discussions on how the rules apply to the work of race officials (running races, hearing protests, on-water judging and umpiring, etc.). Dave brings his “sailor’s point of view” to the discussion as well as his “two feet in the rule book” approach. These workshops/roundtables are excellent opportunities for like-minded people to get together and discuss complex issues, as well as perfect opportunities for people with little to no experience as a race official. Note: these are not part of the US Sailing race official certification or re-certification process and accrue no credit towards certification.

  • Held at PYC clubhouse
  • Starts at 2:30PM
  • Ends at ~4:30PM
  • Free to all.

Monday Evening Rules & Tactics Seminar

On Monday, July 29, Dave will hold his entertaining and popular racing rules and tactics seminar at PYC. Pizza will be provided at 6:00 to help quash the after-work hunger pangs. Dave’s presentation will start at 6:30 and run until 9:30 or 10:00, including audience Q&A. The seminar is based on the following theme:

The Rules from Start to Finish – this is an entertaining and informative look at situations around the race course where it helps to know the rules. Dave discusses the rules and the tactics in each situation with a look to how to maximize winning tactics with an increased rules knowledge, and includes spectacular video of many of the tactical situations he discusses. These talks are particularly useful for crews to help them understand better what will happen next and what information the skipper needs to know.

Junior Sailing Coaching

Dave Perry will coach the PYC and SailMaine Junior Sailing Programs and help the junior sailors prepare for the Maine State Championships later in the week. Dave will coach the junior 420 sailors at PYC on Tuesday, July 30, and then coach the junior Optimist sailors at SailMaine on Wednesday, July 31. Dave will customize these coaching sessions for the sailors based on discussions with the sailing programs’ staff and instructors.

Tuesday Evening Etchells Racing & Video Debrief

Dave Perry will coach the Etchells sailors during Fleet 27’s evening racing on Tuesday, July 30. Following the races, Dave will highlight issues and critique the fleet with what he promises to be a light-hearted and humorous, but educational post-race video debrief.

The event will start at PYC at 4:30 PM where Dave will introduce himself and describe what he plans to do. We will head out to the boats and race our normal schedule of races. Dave will provide advice to the racing fleet using his loud hailer.

Following the racing, Dave will conduct a post-race video debrief of the race with the goal to help everyone improve their decision making and skills around the course.

If the weather results in race cancellation, Dave will select one of his entertaining and informative tactics presentations to present to the audience.

Wednesday Evening J/24 Racing & Video Debrief

Dave Perry will coach the J/24 sailors during Fleet 43’s evening racing on Wednesday, July 31. Following the races, Dave will highlight issues and critique the fleet with what he promises to be a light-hearted and humorous, but educational post-race video debrief.

The event will start at PYC at 4:30 PM where Dave will introduce himself and describe what he plans to do. The fleet will head out to the boats and race a normal schedule of races. Dave will provide advice to the racing fleet using his loud hailer.

Dave is Prepared if Weather Cancels Sailing or Racing Session

The nature of this event means there are can be no refunds if the weather does not cooperate. If sailing is abandoned for weather, or any other reason, Dave will substitute one of his popular shoreside programs. Dave can present on many different topics. Some of his most popular presentations are:

Tactics in Crowds! – an advanced and humorous look at tactical positioning at key areas around the race course (start, windward mark and leeward mark), with an analysis of the applicable rules and decision making process in each. Dave includes spectacular video of all the tactical situations he discusses. This is an enjoyable presentation for all levels of racers, and for non-racer supporters. When done in a Full Day Program, Dave creates an actual race customized to the conditions in the local area, and participants sail the race making all the tactical and strategic decisions from start to finish, with Dave’s feedback. The title can also be finessed to emphasize more that it’s a strategy and decision making focus, something like “Winning Race Strategies and How the Top Teams Make Decisions.”

Preparing for a Protest Hearing – One would not go into court without a lawyer and without being prepared. But sailors normally go into the protest room on their own and with little preparation, and often the results are frustrating. In this presentation, Dave creates a mock protest hearing, with the participants being the parties and the protest committee. Through this engaging and often humorous format, Dave goes through the important technical rules in Part 5, Section B of the rule book; and more importantly gives lots of tips on how best to present ones’ case, defend oneself, deal with witnesses and hear the protest as a member of the protest committee.

Building a Winning Team – an in-depth look at how to put together a winning team, and how to operate as one. Through humorous role plays and extensive scenario analysis, Dave fleshes out the key roles on a boat, and shows how there is a role for everyone. In addition, he shares proven communication and decision-making systems used by the top teams, and explores the interpersonal dynamics which can often mean the difference between success and disaster.
