Results of Aug 11 Racing and More Goings On

Good morning all,

We had another practice start, as well as two good races ably run by Jay Corson, Dave White, and Bill Conners on Tuesday.  The wind held, but we ran out of time for a third race for the first time this year due to the approaching sunset.

Congratulations to More Cowbell for the evening’s overall winning results.

  1. More Cowbell        3 – 2
  2. Medusa                 5 – 1  as well as Most improved boat from prior week
  3. Schadenfreude 2  1 – 6
  4. Greyhound            4 – 3
  5. Vixen                     4 – 4
  6. Wiki-Wiki               6 – 5

Yes, the scoring is correct!  You may notice two 4th place finishes in the first race.  We had our first protest of the year and the vessel on the receiving end of the protest committee’s wrath opted to take a 30% penalty rather than a DSQ.

Lessons learn from this protest:

  • We can hold a protest hearing and socially distance.
  • Don’t hold a protest that ends after dark, almost impossible to read anything.
  • If a boat feels it has been interfered with and decides to protest, announce it to the other boat and do so loudly and get a response that your hail has been heard.
  • Place your red flag up quickly and point it out to the offending boat.
  • Give the other boat a chance to do circles or take a percentage penalty.
  • If a boat who finished ahead of you does take a percentage penalty, those who finish after that boat do not move up a position.

Next, we didn’t get a third race this week due to sunset.  Our SI’s have given notice that this coming week is the beginning of the 5:30 start time, BEWARE and NOTIFY ALL OF YOUR CREW TO GET TO THE BOAT EARLY.

The Lobster Bowl discussions are progressing and an announcement of its 2020 future will be coming soon.  We need your input, hope you have responded to Ehren’s survey.  We also need your help in race committee, support boats, welcoming, launching and retrieving at HBS.  Please reach out to the Butter Boys this week.

Alyson and John Crowley have purchased ESP from Alex Agnew.  The original Greyhound is being evaluated by Rick Fontana.  Rick would love to sail as crew. If you have a spot for a race during the rest of the season, Rick can be reached at 207-650-9911.

John Milburn as Nominating Committee chair is looking for folks to join the 2021 Board.  Please give back to your Fleet.  Contact John and step up soon.

Thank you for sailing with us and I look forward to seeing you next Tuesday at 5:30.
