Test Rule 18 & Mark Storage

Hello all,

Since our Fleet’s decision on extending the Test Rule 18 for the rest of the summer and fall series races, I have fielded several questions on the Test Rule.  First, I can find no videos of the Test Rule.  I am, however, forwarding the info provided by Dave Perry and highly recommend you print up the Test Rule Quiz as well as the Test Rule Summary of game Changes, 9 and 5 pages.  Take the quiz this weekend, I will provide the answers Monday.  Please take the time to do this to improve our mark roundings and reduce protestable situations.

On another note, it has been noted that several of our marks, anchors, and counterweights have been missing.  They have now been found and returned to their normal places.  In the future, all of our Etchells marks should be returned after racing to the RC lockers middle bay, lower level, in the large blue bin.  We use the heavy weight 2′ yellow cylinder as the offset, other marks are the 4′ orange or yellow cylinders.  All anchors and weights are to be kept on the Lindsay Lord in the grey bin under the aft deck, port side, after racing.  Do not bring the heavy items up to the RC locker.

Thank you and enjoy the weekend.

Tim T.

Subject: 2022 Test Rule 18 requests and reminders from Dave Perry

Hi all…

Thank you again for your interest and help in the 2022 Test Rule 18 project.

Here are a few requests and reminders…

1)   If you are planning on using the test rule in racing between May 15 and July 15, 2022, please let me know; and let me know what type of racing (one-design, performance rating, radio sailing racing, team racing, etc.) and type of boat(s) will be involved.

2)   Attached are some documents you can send (simply forward this email if easiest) to the sailors and race officials using the test rule:

a.   The 2022 Test Rule 18
b.   The two papers summarizing the significant Simplifications and Game Changes in the test rule
c.   The 2022 Test Rule 18 Quiz (I will be going over the answers to the Quiz in the 2022 Test Rule 18 Zoom sessions next week; see below for a reminder of when those will be)

3)   Here is the schedule of 2022 Test Rule 18 Zoom sessions I will be holding next week. Please remind your sailors/race officials and encourage them to join one of the sessions (they are all the same program). I will be explaining the test rule and the significant differences that we want feedback on, answering any and all questions, and going over the answers to the 2022 Rule 18 Rules Quiz.

These sessions will be recorded and I will send you a link to the recording the following week that you can share with your sailors and race officials as well.

The three mid-May Zoom sessions:
Tuesday, May 17 @ 2300 GMT (7:00 – 8:00pm New York, USA time)
Wednesday, May 18 @ 1700 UTC/GMT (7:00 – 8:00pm Paris, France time)

  1. Good morning to all and a glorious day we have today,
As promised, below are the answers to the 11 questions posed by Dave Perry as an introduction to the Test Rule 18 we are continuing to sail under this season.

I am in hopes the answers and my discussion as to why the answers are as indicated will clarify Mark-Room for you.

The crew of WhiteHawk will be providing RC duties tomorrow night and we look forward to seeing you all tomorrow. I can take two more crew aboard the Lindsay Lord if you have someone interested, have them contact me and be on the dock by 4:45.

    Answers to Test Rule Quiz

    1. No. Preamble to Section C…”do not apply at a starting mark”.

    2. Their proper course. Def. of Mark-Room & 18.2a.

    3. Their proper course. 18.4 Inside Overlapped…no further than PC.

    4. Do not penalize either boat. 18.1 SA did not pass head to wind nor did she leave the zone nor leave mark astern, therefore SA is entitled to mark-room at all times.

    5. Penalize SA. 18.2.a.2 if the boats are not overlapped, the boat that has not reached the zone…shall give the other boat mark-room.

    6. When the mark is astern of WI. 18.1.b …has left the mark astern.

    7. Penalize PB. 18.3.b.1

    8. Rule 18.2 does not apply. RRS 11 S must keep clear of P, but P must give S room to keep clear under RRS 15 and 16.1 f she luffs.

    9. Yes. 18.2.e SW is outside boat when both boats tack.

10.Do not penalize either boat. 18.1.b the mark was not astern so SA was still entitled to mark-room.

11.Penalize SA. 18.1.b the gybe occurred after SA had the mark astern so 18 no longer applies. SA gybed to port and SB was still on starboard, RRS 10.
